The Holinshed Project

Holinshed’s Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland was at once the crowning achievement of Tudor historiography and the most important single source for contemporary playwrights and poets, above all Shakespeare, Spenser, Daniel, and Drayton.

The project’s aim is to stimulate a comprehensive reappraisal of the Chronicles as a work of historiography and a major source for imaginative writers.

The parallel texts of the 1577 and 1587 editions are available, enabling users to compare the two versions, and providing navigation by regnal years and Holinshed’s original chapter structure.

The text transcriptions (by the Text Creation Partnership) are freely accessible but page images can only be viewed by EEBO subscribers.
